Candy Nakamarra is an up and coming artist who was born in 1964 in Yuendumu, a community 293 km northwest of Alice Springs in the Northern Territory.
Her father is Johnny Warangkula Tjuppurula, a well known artist who was one of the first to paint traditional dreaming stories on canvas during the Papunya Tula movement. Johnny taught his Candy and her brother Mike how to paint while passing down important family stories to them.
The most significant of these is the Kalipiynpa Water Dreaming story, which is represented in the majority of Candy’s works. Kalipinypa is a claypan covered in a stony deposit that helped to trap water after heavy rains. This resulted in the propagation of wildflowers and other plant life.
